Educational Outreach with Schools and other groups

Schools or other groups are encouraged to contact the Warrior Run-Fort Freeland Heritage Society for customized tours of the Hower-Slote House, the Historic Warrior Run Church and cemetery or for educational demonstrations.   Visits or demonstrations can be tailored toward specific areas that will supplement the student’s curriculum.  Visiting both sites can enhance students learning of Pennsylvania and local history with information related to trades, colonial food, period clothing, the battle at Fort Freeland, forts and buildings, Indians, living on the frontier, rebuilding of the church, the cemetery history encompassing veterans of four wars and many other historical topics to collaborate with classroom studies.  Hands-on trade demonstrations can also be arranged.

Picnic tables and restrooms are situated by the Historic Warrior Run Church with ample parking at both sites for buses.

Group tours are given during fair weather because none of the buildings contain heat.

Please email info@freelandfarm.org for more information and to schedule a visit.

In August 2024, Richard Nornhold (Society member), Alex Karns (student demonstrator) and Landon Koch (Society president), traveled to Bellefonte with Rich’s rope making equipment to educate children from the Bellefonte Trail-Life and American Heritage Girls troops.

There were roughly 45 children in attendance with their parents for the interactive demo. Rich demonstrated with Alex the origins of rope making, explaining to the young folks what it was traditionally made with, to how the term TOW rope came to be.  It was an interesting demonstration, and the children were more than happy to get hands on and participate in most of the aspects of the job.  They made 4 different ropes all together including a tug-of-war rope that the kids were enjoying and can continue to enjoy on their outings.

We thank the Bellefonte Trail-Life program for the invitation and the chance to expand on our mission to educate children and youth of the ways of our ancestors.  It was a fantastic opportunity and a fun filled evening in Bellefonte.
